It is a special feeling to put the final touches on a new kitchen or whole home project and unveil it to an excited homeowner for the first time. It is something entirely different when you get to tell those same homeowners that their new space is an award-winning design.
As luck would have it, Sunday Morning Kitchen and Bath owner Marta Layton gets to enjoy that feeling more often than most.
On June 25, Sunday Morning Kitchen and Bath won two national Chrysalis residential interior awards—one for Under $75,000 and the other in the Under $150,000 category. Since 1993, the Chrysalis Awards have recognized the nation’s finest remodeling projects, showcasing the professional excellence of the residential and commercial remodeling industries. Ironically, Marta was at a showroom meeting with a client when she learned of the recent honors.
Both SMKAB projects were based in North Texas and completed within the calendar year. Also noteworthy, with the double win, Sunday Morning Kitchen and Bath was one of only two remodelers in the entire country to win more than one award this year.
From a Flooded Home to an Award-Winning Whole Home Renovation
The Under $150,000 award-winning project was unique in that it involved a flood-destroyed home. The homeowners had busy schedules, three small children, and nowhere near the time or energy to develop design plans and choose materials on their own. Sunday Morning Kitchen and Bath stepped in after a neighbor referred them, instantly taking the reins with thoughtful planning, curated selections, and cohesive design services that transformed a stressful situation into a clear path toward a beautifully renewed home.
Did we mention this was more than just a single-room renovation? It’s true—we completely remodeled and revitalized the kitchen, master bathroom, laundry room, pantry, and the family room.
A few highlights include:
- A bright, open kitchen with smarter storage and a more functional layout
- An upgraded cabinet pantry to replace the walk-in pantry
- Large-format tile with reduced grout lines for the primary bathroom
- A custom kitchen hood with a champagne bronze pot filler and dramatic veined granite
- Patterned tile for the laundry room
- A workstation sink with ledges for accessories
- Pull-out drawers for spices, cutting boards, and cookware
- Improved kitchen layout and space-saving opportunities by relocating the water heater
- An overall lower project cost without sacrificing quality or style
- A fast-tracked installation process

A Small Project With Bold Ideas Yields National Attention
Unlike the homeowners in the project above, these homeowners were looking for an upgrade that would make their kitchen more functional, beautiful, and enjoyable to use every day. In their words, they loved everything about their Denton home, which they’d moved into in mid-2021. Everything about it was perfect, but for one reason or another, the kitchen left something to be desired.
The wife was a professional baker and was known for creating out-of-this-world custom cakes, cookies, and everything in between. Unfortunately, counter space was limited, the oven was small and outdated, and the overall layout (which included a tiny island and space-hogging L-shaped peninsula) often made even routine baking projects feel cramped and inefficient. She needed a space that could accommodate her passion and creativity while also serving as a comfortable gathering place for parties and everyday family life.
Honoring the clients’ desire to leave the footprint unchanged, Sunday Morning Kitchen and Bath orchestrated a complete reimagining of the space by essentially taking everything down to the studs and starting from scratch. A few highlights of the remodel include:
- Removed space-hogging peninsula to open the layout and reclaim valuable floor space
- Installed an upgraded cooktop and double oven to increase cooking/baking capacity
- Anchored the room with a custom eight-foot island topped with leathered granite
- Replaced all cabinetry, instantly increasing storage solutions
- Replaced oversized refrigerator with a counter-depth model
- Added two pendant-style fandilliers that blend modern lighting with improved airflow
- Installed new floor tile and a contemporary backsplash for a clean, cohesive aesthetic
- A custom wood-finished kitchen hood to serve as an eye-catching focal point
