This massive renovation project, nestled in Arlington, Virginia, showcases an innovative approach to Universal Design, focusing on creating a home that supports aging in place. With a final cost of $625,686.71, this transformation has prepared a space that allows the homeowners to live independently and comfortably in their golden years.
Key Project Highlights
The homeowners, preparing for retirement, desired significant changes to their 1,000-square-foot home. To accommodate their needs for one-level living, two major additions were integrated: a new kitchen and living area in the back, and a bedroom and bathroom to the side. The goal was to ensure all essential amenities were accessible on the main floor.
Key Elements of the Renovation
Side Addition: A former sunroom made way for a new bedroom and an accessible bathroom, designed with future needs in mind. The bedroom doubles as a spacious office until it is needed as a main-floor bedroom.
Back Addition: The removal of an old deck made room for a large kitchen and living area, featuring modern amenities and a seamless connection to outdoor spaces planned for future development.
Interior Reconfigurations: The original kitchen space was transformed into a main-level laundry and mudroom, optimizing the house’s flow and utility.
Design Highlights
Accessible Bathroom and Main Level Bedroom: Inspired by Mediterranean aesthetics this brand new bathroom features custom elements like a hand-painted vessel sink from Morocco and rich blue mosaic tiles. Main level bedroom can be used as office and converted to bedroom as homeowners age.
New Kitchen and Living Space in the Back Addition: family room is spacious and inviting and new kitchen is a drastic improvement over the dark, cramped one before the renovation. Original kitchen space was converted to mudroom and main level laundry.
Basement and Upstairs Bathroom: Once dark and underused, now a bright, inviting basement space that can serve as a guest suite. Upstairs the bathroom was remodeled in a style reminiscent of its original 1940s design. Storage was increased while preserving the vintage appeal of the space.
